Medicare Supplements

Are you wanting to take your Medicare coverage to the next level? If so, Medicare Supplements can do just that.

You may be surprised to find that even with the coverage Original Medicare provides, you’ll still have out-of-pocket costs you’ll need to pay. Fortunately, a Medicare Supplement plan, also known as Medigap, can help lower these costs so you don’t have to pay as much out-of-pocket.

What You Should Know

Medicare Supplements have certain requirements for enrollment.

You need to:

  • Have Medicare Part A and Part B
  • Enroll within six months of having Part B (it is harder to get a Medigap plan after this period)

You should consider:

  • If you would rather have Medicare Advantage or a Supplement plan. You can’t have both
  • What your current and expected medical needs are

Medicare Supplements are not a replacement for health insurance. If Medicare doesn’t cover the treatment or service, you won’t have Medicare Supplement coverage.

If you do not sign up for a Medicare Supplement plan within six months of getting Medicare Part B, you will have to go through a medical underwriting process. You’ll be evaluated based on your health, and this can be the determining factor in your qualification. But if you’re accepted, the plan is yours.

There are ten Medigap plans to choose from: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N.

How Supplements Work

When you get services from any healthcare provider who accepts Medicare, your Medicare Supplement will pick up where your Original Medicare coverage left off. Depending on the type of plan you get, your remaining costs are either covered in full or significantly reduced.

All ten plans are also standardized. This means the benefits for each plan are the same no matter where you get your Medicare Supplement policy.

Types of Costs Covered

While each Medicare Supplement plan provides different coverage, here is a basic overview of what could possibly be covered by a supplement plan.

Part A coverage:

  • Deductible
  • Hospital coinsurance and other costs
  • Hospice coinsurance/deductible
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • First three pints of blood
  • 80% of the costs for foreign travel emergencies

Part B:

  • Deductible
  • Coinsurance or copay
  • Excess charges
